Sanford Riverwalk, located in Sanford, FL along the shores of Lake Monroe, is a 2 mile walking / biking trail with beautiful uninterrupted water views of Lake Monroe. The trail is popular among local Seminole County residents. You’ll find residents fishing along the lake shore, joggers, bicyclists, dog walkers, and families enjoying the scenery. Riverwalk is also within walking distance of Historic Downtown Sanford which offers plenty of restaurants with outdoor curbside seating, and usually live music on the weekends.
Along Riverwalk you’ll also come across the Veterans Memorial Park which was built in 1924 as the city pier and yacht basin. The park was dedicated in 1927 as a memorial to veterans that lost their lives in World War I, and was later rededicated in 1973 as a memorial to all veterans. The park was renovated in 2006 and is well maintained. The park is on a walled peninsula the stretches out into Lake Monroe. The park is lined with large Canary Island Date Palm Trees (Phoenix Canariensis).
At the center of the park is a large black statue with a Bald Eagle located at the top with a quote from Thomas Jefferson “A nation united can never be conquered”, which Thomas Jefferson wrote to John Adams in 1816. There are also many public benches surrounding the park which directly overlook Lake Monroe and are fantastic for watching sunsets.
After passing the Veterans Memorial Park you’ll arrive at Marina Island which boasts a public boat ramp, boat slips, a couple of restaurants, and an authentic Sternwheel Paddleboat which offers river cruises on the St. Johns River completed with food, music and incredible scenery. There is also a company located on Marina Island that offers sailing lessons on Lake Monroe.
